School Designated Area Maps
This page provides information on the designated areas – or catchment areas – which have been determined or proposed by Devon County Council or the Governing Bodies of schools and academies which have responsibility for their own arrangements.

For many schools, there is a priority for children seeking admission if they live in the designated area if the school is oversubscribed. It is helpful for you to know whether or not your child lives in a school’s designated area.
Changes can be made to designated areas annually and you will see above on this page links to the designated areas determined for this academic year 2011-12, for next year 2012-13 and, from the end of December, you will see the changes proposed for the 2013-14 academic year. (Further information on admission arrangements)
You will be able to click on any point in Devon and be advised on the designated schools: primary OR infant and junior AND secondary. You should be aware that the following schools do not operate designated areas:
- Colyton Grammar School
- Our Lady and St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, Teignmouth
- Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, Barnstaple

Transport on designated school grounds
There is a statutory entitlement to free transport to and from the nearest available school under certain circumstances – in Devon this is for Devon County Council area resident children at secondary school who live further than 3 miles and for children at primary school who live further than 2 miles. There is further entitlement for those on a low income and those on a low income attending the nearest faith school available. (Further information on Devon’s education transport policy) In all cases, children must satisfy the distance criterion for school transport.
Additionally, Devon provides free transport to children who satisfy the distance criterion above who attend the designated school for their address. The designated area maps will tell you whether you may be entitled to transport on designated school grounds.
For Further Education Colleges and School Sixth Forms, Devon recognises designated areas for transport purposes.
Exceptions to designated school transport
i) Newton Abbot College and Coombeshead College
Transport on designated school grounds is only available to one secondary school. Residents of Newton Abbot should be aware that for 2011-12 the designated area for Newton Abbot College has been extended to also cover the area covered by Coombeshead College. Priority for residents exists to both schools for admissions purposes but transport on designated school grounds is only available in the shared area to Coombeshead College. Transport to Newton Abbot College is available where it is the nearer of the two secondary schools.
From 2012-13 the designated areas for both Coombeshead College and Newton Abbot College will be the same: both areas will have been extended to cover the entire area. Priority for residents will exist to both schools for admissions purposes but transport on designated school grounds will only available to the single designated college from 2010-11. Transport on nearest school grounds to whichever college is the nearer will continue to be available.
ii) St Andrew’s and Lady Modiford’s Church of England Primary Schools
Transport on designated school grounds is only available to one primary school. Residents of Harrowbeer should be aware that there is a secondary catchment area for St Andrew’s covering this area, overlapping with the Lady Modiford’s area. For new applicants for 2011-12, transport on designated school grounds will only be available to Lady Modiford’s. Children already receiving transport to St Andrew’s on designated school grounds will not be affected.
From 2012-13, the Governing Body of St Andrew’s has determined that Harrowbeer will no longer be a secondary catchment area for the school.
iii) Sidmouth Church of England Primary School
Transport on designated school grounds is only available to one primary school site. Residents of Sidmouth should be aware that from 2011-12, the former Infant and Junior Schools have been replaced by a single primary school, using the same three sites. Children in Key Stage 2 will be educated at the former junior school site and transport entitlement will be unaffected. For Key Stage 1 children, transport will not be available on designated school grounds to both former infant school sites. It will be available to the nearer of the two sites only. Once a place has been offered for your Key Stage 1 child, you will be invited to express a preference for which site you would like your child to attend. Please consider whether there will be a transport entitlement .
iv) Queen Elizabeth’s
Entitlement to education transport support will be based on the distance from home to the site at which the pupil will be educated: Lower School or Upper School.
