At least 15 people have been confirmed dead in Sunday’s shooting attack at Bondi beach. Many were attending an event to mark the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.

The Leader of Devon County Council, Councillor Julian Brazil, said

“Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go to all those affected by this most horrific tragedy.

“Hatred and intolerance have no place in our society and the actions of these perpetrators must be condemned.

“For all this to take place in one of Australia’s most popular and busy tourist destinations, marking the start of Hanukkah, is truly deplorable.

“We offer our thoughts to all of our Jewish community within Devon and reaffirm our commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all our residents.”

The Chair of Devon County Council, Councillor Caroline Leaver, said:

“Our deepest condolences go out to all the families and friends of all those affected in yesterday’s shooting.

“The Jewish festival of lights is a celebration, a time for families to come together. It’s therefore horrific that such a celebration should so quickly become such a tragedy.

“We stand by all of our communities in Devon and no community should need to fear violence at any time.”
