A public information event will be held next week (Tuesday 9 September) about the upcoming A382 improvements near Newton Abbot.
The scheme, which is due to start towards the end of this month, will upgrade and re-align the A382 between Forches Cross and Stover (Ice House Copse) and develop the Jetty Marsh Link road and Whitehills roundabout to help ease congestion, improve safety and encourage active travel.
Along with contractor M Group we have been discussing the work with businesses along the route to make them aware of the traffic management options that have been explored.
Feedback from these businesses has already helped to inform the development of the traffic management plans to carry out the work.
Plans will be on show at a drop-in event at Newton Abbot Town Council offices, Newton’s Place, from 2pm-7pm on Tuesday 9 September where people will have the opportunity to speak to the project team. For anyone unable to attend the event, plans will then be displayed at Newton Abbot Library for the remainder of the month.
Information leaflets are also being sent out to nearby residents and scheme details are on the A382 webpages.
To carry out this work, from Thursday 25 September the A382 will be closed at the Whitehills junction for around 11 months. Once the roundabout is complete, the work will move to Forches Cross, where there will be a further closure for 12 months.
In planning for this scheme, traffic simulation technology has been used to assess the potential impact on traffic for the travelling public, through the use of temporary traffic lights and road closures with diversions.
This modelling showed that the solution which resulted in the least disruption was road closures with two diversion options. Traffic flow would be quicker and more reliable using diversions rather than waiting to get through multiple sets of temporary traffic lights. It also reduces construction time by a year compared with using temporary traffic lights.
To ensure diversion route options via the A383 and B3193 are able to cope with re-directed traffic, a number of other interventions will be introduced. These will include:
- Re-programming of existing traffic lights
- Making Greycoat Lane one way
- Closure of Ringslade Road southbound
- Traffic signals at the junction of Clay Lane/Clay Pits Way
The diversion routes would be monitored to enable journey times to be displayed in real time on 17 Variable Message Signs (VMS) in key areas so people can choose the quickest route for their journey.
The A382 improvement scheme is critical for economic growth in the area by unlocking the delivery of proposed developments in Teignbridge District Council’s adopted Local Plan.
It is being funded by UK Government, Devon County Council and Teignbridge District Council, and builds upon the first phase of improvements to the A382 and A382/A383 Link Road.
