New junction on outskirts of Exeter set to open

The new junction

The final highway scheme of major infrastructure improvements in south west Exeter has been delivered and will open next week.

The new Chudleigh Road link will open to traffic on Monday (19 January), providing a new signal controlled junction with the A379.

This new road layout replaces the current junction between Chudleigh Road and the A379, completing the switch to the new road alignment. The former route will be permanently closed to motor vehicles.

The project has delivered around 390 metres of new road as well as widening of the existing A379 to support the developments in the area.

This junction is part of the South West Exeter Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) programme, coordinated by us and funded by Government, which is unlocking land for around 2,500 new homes.

Councillor Dan Thomas, Cabinet Member for Highways, said:

“I’m pleased that this final major element of highway infrastructure is now ready to open. The developments on the highway in south west Exeter have been a huge undertaking over the past five-and-a-half years, but it demonstrates that with the right investment, substantial improvements can be made to support vital growth in the county. Thanks must go to residents and businesses for being extremely patient throughout this project.”

Pauline Schaffer, Director – Infrastructure Funding at Homes England, said: “The opening of the Chudleigh Road link is an excellent example of how funding from Homes England is helping to create vital infrastructure to unlock new homes and thriving places people can be proud of.”

Construction of the new Chudleigh Road link started in November 2024 and has been delivered by Wills Bros Civil Engineering Ltd.

The scheme has included substantial earthworks with approximately 48,000 m³ of material needed to raise the level of the road for new and widened embankments, and a further 14,500 m³ of soil mixed with a binding material to strengthen the ground conditions beneath the road.
