To the Editor,

As Chair and local members of Devon County Council we are writing to share an important message and reaffirm this council’s commitment to standing against hate crime in all its forms.

At our recent council meeting, we adopted a motion that reflects our shared values and our determination to protect and celebrate the diversity of our communities.

The motion reads:

“The Council wishes to make it clear that we, Councillors of Devon County Council, are proud to represent a vibrant and diverse community. We totally condemn any form of racism, intolerance, bigotry or xenophobia. Hate crimes have no place in our society and we will do all we can to prevent them. We believe that the residents across Devon, whatever their gender, race, disability, creed, age, colour, sexual orientation or gender reassignment, must be treated equally.”

This council wishes to send a clear message stating that we are proud to live in a diverse and tolerant society. Hate crimes have no place in our country and we  condemn all such crimes unequivocally.

We will not allow hate to become acceptable. We will work to ensure that local bodies and programmes have the support and resources they need to fight and prevent hate crimes. We reassure all people living in this area that they are valued members of our community.

We want every resident to know, if they experience such unacceptable behaviour, that help is available, and that they are not alone.

Help and advice is available on Devon County Council’s website Hate crime and hate incidents – Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We are proud to live in a county that values inclusion, respect and kindness.

Let us all continue to stand together against hate and ensure Devon remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Caroline Leaver
Chair of Devon County Council

Councillor Syed Jusef
Devon County Councillor for Barnstaple North
