Kingsbridge car parks offering free parking to support businesses

Work in Fore Street, Kingsbridge

Kingsbridge’s town centre car parks run by South Hams District Council will be free to use after 2pm each day to try and encourage more people into the town while we carry out essential repair work.

The temporary offer, which will be available in the council’s Quay and Fore Street car parks, is aiming to encourage more people into the centre of Kingsbridge to support businesses while essential works affect roads in the heart of the town. South Hams District Council have worked together with us to come up with the offer to try and help businesses through the disruption.

We’re currently working on installing a new 45-metre-long culvert – an underground pipe that allows water to flow under roads and buildings – in Fore Street in Kingsbridge to replace the existing culvert, which is in such poor condition that is needs to be completely replaced.

There are a number of complex issues which need to be resolved to complete the work, which means there’s currently no end date for when the work will be complete.

Councillor Dan Thomas, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and South Hams District Council’s Leader, said:

“Both councils recognise how important Kingsbridge’s town centre is to local residents, businesses and visitors, and we know the current work is causing unavoidable disruption.

“By offering free parking after 2pm each day while the work’s taking place, we want to make it easier for people to continue supporting the town while this essential infrastructure project is completed.

“We’re grateful for everyone’s patience as teams work through a very complex set of challenges beneath Fore Street, and we’ll continue doing everything we can to help the town centre stay vibrant during this period.”

Councillor Julian Brazil, Devon County Council Leader and South Hams Lead Member for Car Parking, said:

“The work on Fore Street, right in the heart of Kingsbridge, is likely to have had a disruptive effect on town businesses, so the free parking offer is something both councils have worked up together to try and lessen the impact.

“Supporting our economy is one of South Hams District Council’s main objectives, so we hope this will encourage people to drive into the town centre despite the work and support our shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes.”
