Recovery work is continuing in the wake of Storms Ingrid and Chandra, but some roads remain temporarily closed.
We warned earlier this week that even when flooding on some roads has subsided, there’s a chance that we may still not be able to reopen some of them immediately. It will depend on the condition of the road, whether it’s safe to use or whether repairs will be necessary.

Until flooded roads have drained, the council will not be able to assess the potential damage to the road structure. It’s possible, the council warns, that some roads may remain temporarily closed, even after flood levels have subsided, if the roads are unsafe and require repairs.

Yesterday, we were receiving reports of congestion on minor roads, as drivers seek to avoid roads closed or partially closed due to localised flooding.
We are advising road users in areas where there is known flooding to only travel if it’s essential.
People in flooded areas of the county are asked to wait until road conditions improve and for routes to reopen before travelling.
We expect improving weather conditions today will allow some roads to drain and reopen. However, flooded roads that otherwise drain into swollen rivers will take longer to clear.
Travel Advice
We are reminding residents of the following advice:
- Be alert to fallen trees and branches, particularly on minor roads where they may not have been reported
- Never drive through floodwater or swollen flowing water, you don’t know how deep it is. Find an alternative route
- Allow additional time for your journey. Reduce your speed and leave more space between you and the vehicle in front
- Drive with care and according to the conditions
- Listen to local radio for updates on current weather conditions
