County of Devon begins recovery in aftermath of Storm Chandra

A flooded road and pavement near Exeter

Improving conditions are being reported this morning, but parts of Devon are still experiencing localised flooding today (Wednesday 28 January).

Many schools that had been temporarily closed yesterday have reopened this morning. A few remain closed (see link below)..

Some of the county’s roads remain temporarily closed while conditions make them impassable.

Yesterday, we were receiving reports of congestion on minor roads, as drivers seek to avoid roads closed or partially closed due to localised flooding.

We are advising road users in areas where there is known flooding to only travel if it’s essential.

People in flooded areas of the county are asked to wait until road conditions improve and for routes to reopen before travelling.

We expect improving weather conditions today will allow some roads to drain and reopen. However, flooded roads that otherwise drain into swollen rivers will take longer to clear.

Travel Advice

We are reminding residents of the following advice:

  • Be alert to fallen trees and branches, particularly on minor roads where they may not have been reported
  • Never drive through floodwater or swollen flowing water, you don’t know how deep it is. Find an alternative route
  • Allow additional time for your journey. Reduce your speed and leave more space between you and the vehicle in front
  • Drive with care and according to the conditions
  • Listen to local radio for updates on current weather conditions
