Celebrating our care experienced young people

We’ve recently held our annual Celebration of Achievement event for our children and young people in care and leaving care.

The evening, organised by Virtual School, took place at Exeter Racecourse and recognises the amazing achievements that our young people have made over the last 12 months.

Senior officers and councillors presented young people with certificates and gift vouchers in recognition of their hard work and accomplishments.

Some care leavers spoke at the event about their experience of working for Devon County Council.

Approximately 200 young people attended the evening, bringing with them a further 275 guests.

In total, 521 young people were nominated for recognition, with those who didn’t attend the celebration evening are receiving their awards via the post.

The evening was a great success and rounded off Love Our Children Week 2025, our first week-long celebration of our children in care and care leavers across Devon.  The week saw lots of events and activities including a talk from Lads Like Us, a rounders match between staff and our young people and the launch of some key and co-produced projects such as the Promise, a welcome pack for young asylum seekers and a new Children in Care workbook and the Bright Spots feedback from our 4-11 year olds.
