National Lottery Heritage Fund

The National Lottery Heritage Fund has launched its new name and its new approach. Formerly the Heritage Lottery Fund, the new name is intended to align the brand more closely with the National Lottery so that there is greater awareness of where the funding comes from.

The new strategic approach for the next five years includes:

  • a major focus on nature, communities, and on ensuring everyone is able to enjoy heritage
  • new models of investment, moving beyond grants to include loans and partnerships
  • more support for commercial, sustainable approaches to tackling heritage that is in danger of being lost
  • investment and support to help heritage organisations to be more financially sustainable
  • a requirement for every heritage project that receives funding to be environmentally friendly
  • simpler, streamlined and more efficient funding

The new National Lottery Heritage Fund open programme is for any type of heritage project. There are separate guidelines for projects seeking:

  • £3,000 to £10,000
  • £10,000 to £250,000
  • £250,000 to £5million

There will also be major grants (over £5m), joint funds to deliver strategic initiatives, social investments and heritage funding campaigns. The first two campaigns will launch this year, focusing on helping organisations to:

  • build capacity and organisational resilience
  • build digital capabilities
