Regional, national and specialist libraries, archives and records offices can apply for grants to acquire rare books and manuscripts that they would not otherwise have the resources to purchase. Friends of the Nations’ Libraries (FNL) helps eligible institutions to purchase rare printed books, manuscripts, records and archives of historical, literary, artistic, architectural, musical or similar interest.
Grants typically range from £200 to £20,000 and can be used towards acquisition costs only.
Applications are accepted from:
- the national libraries and the libraries of national museums
- record offices and archives services
- university and specialist libraries
- any museum, gallery or collecting institution to which the public has reasonable access and which, in the opinion of the FNL, constitutes a proper repository for the proposed acquisition.
