Road Wardens can request Chapter 8 training for volunteers taking part in the Road Warden Scheme.
Training is available as:
- Full Chapter 8 training course
- Chapter 8 refresher training
Chapter 8 training provides the knowledge and skills needed to safely manage traffic and set up temporary traffic management when carrying out approved activities on the highway.
Chapter 8 training is a traffic management qualification that teaches people how to work safely on or near roads and highways. It is based on Chapter 8 of the UK Traffic Signs Manual, which sets out the rules for temporary traffic management on road.
Before You Request Training
To be eligible for Chapter 8 training, your Town or Parish Council must have a signed Road Warden Agreement in place with Devon County Council.
If you have not yet joined the Road Warden Scheme, please visit the Road Warden Scheme page for information about the scheme, eligibility requirements and how to apply.

Once your request has been received, a member of the Highways team will contact you to discuss availability and booking arrangements.
Important Information
Training can only be provided to Road Wardens operating under a signed Road Warden Agreement. Requests from councils that do not have an active agreement in place will not be processed until the agreement has been completed and approved.
