January 2024
Site preparation. To minimise tree felling as much as possible, over 2,000 trees were moved to a temporary nursery for replanting after the project is complete. By keeping and moving trees from the site we will be able to plant larger trees that are accustomed to the local climate and soil conditions.
April 2025
Using some of the trees felled in 2024 we produced our own Biochar using a mobile plant. This material locks in the Carbon sequestered by the trees and will be used in the final landscaping of the scheme.
25 September 2025 – August 2026
The A382 will be closed between Stover MG Garage and Whitehills. We can carry out our work a year quicker by closing the road rather than doing the works under traffic lights, the road will be closed for 11 months.
Traffic levels will be monitored and used to provide live diversion times on both of the signed diversion routes. Following the advice on the live signage will ensure you get to your destination with the least amount of disruption. We have worked with the Emergency Services, National Highways and local businesses during the planning phase of the project and have a series of alternative diversion routes that can be used should a road be unexpectedly closed due to an accident.
During this time a new link road will be constructed through Jetty Marsh linking to Newton Abbot Hospital complete with a cycling and walking path. A new roundabout will replace the current triangle junction.
The road through the marsh will be built on a high embankment with culverts linking the land either side to allow for flood waters to continue to flow as they do currently. Deep vertical wick drains will make sure that the ground water level is reduced. Once the embankment is constructed it will be left to settle for a period of months whilst we work elsewhere on the site, only once the settlement has completed will we return to construct the road on top.
The construction of the new Whitehills roundabout involves the diversion of a significant water main. Working closely with South West Water and its contractor, this work will be carried out at the same time as the embankment construction.
Summer 2026
The new Whitehills roundabout will be opened to the public, work on the Jetty Marsh link road will continue without affecting traffic.
August 2026 – August 2027
The A382 road closure will move to extend between Forches Cross and Stover School for a further 12 months.
The brow of the hill will be reduced by three metres giving a safer profile to the road. The alignment of the new road will move to the west and a roundabout with crossing facilities will be constructed at the new Staplehill Road junction. Access to Stover School will be available from the north during this period.
Summer 2027
The new Jetty Marsh link road and the realigned road at Forches Cross will be open to the public.
