Consultation:

The Castle Primary School, Tiverton: Communication and Interaction Resource Base

UPDATE April 2022

Following completion of the statutory process and consultation, DCC’s Cabinet has approved the proposal to close the Communication and Interaction Resource Base (CAIRB) at Castle Primary School in Tiverton.  This took effect from 28 April 2022.

After much careful consideration and ongoing discussions between the governing board of Castle Primary School and representatives from Devon County Council a decision has been made to propose closure of the Communication and Interaction Resource Base (CAIRB). This has been made in the best interest of all the children in the school regardless of whether they have a CAIRB place or not. The school continues to be committed to supporting all our children regardless of their status in school. For the children who are currently members of the CAIRB we will continue to work alongside them and their families to meet their needs. Both the school and the 0-25 team will discuss the implications further with the parents and pupils affected by the proposal. Further meetings will be offered, as needed.

Devon County Council will seek to identify a suitable alternative base in the area in the future but this will be subject to interest from other schools in establishing a base and meeting certain criteria.

If the decision is made to proceed further with these proposals, then the timetable for the remainder of the process (assuming agreement to each stage) is likely to be:
▪ Brief Notice issued & four-week response period – March 2022
▪ Devon County Council makes decision – April 2022
▪ Implementation – April 2022
