Consultation:

Glendinning Academy School

Update 25 January 2024: the proposal to change the age of range of Glendinning Academy School to 7-16 years of age and removing the offer of post 16 places has been approved by the Department for Education’s Region Group. The proposal will increase the number of places available across Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, with the overall number of pupils (PAN) remaining the same. For further information, please see the Decision Letter and FAQ available under ‘Consultation method’ below.

Background Information

Wave Multi Academy Trust is proposing to change age range of Glendinning Academy Special School to 7 – 16 years or school years 3 – 11. Removing the offer of post 16 places and increasing the number of places available across key stage 2, 3 and 4. Pupil Admission Number (PAN) remaining at 120.

This consultation is seeking the views of parents, pupils, community members and other stakeholders in relation to the change of age range the Special School will serve.

The consultation period will be 20th June 2023 to 18th July 2023.

Context:
Glendinning Academy is a specialist school located in Newton Abbot for pupils with social communication and interaction needs. It opened in September 2020 and has grown over the last 3 years to provide places for up to 120 pupils. Currently the academy has pupils from aged 7 to 15, across school years 3 to 10, and has reached its PAN of 120 pupils. In September 2023 it will be above the PAN.

It was planned that by September 2024 there would be the offer of a small number of year 12 places providing post-16 education. Since opening there has been a significant demand for primary and secondary phase places and there are places available at post-16 colleges and other provision within the area.

Proposal:
Wave Multi Academy Trust is consulting on the proposal that there will be no year 12 (post-16) places available in September 2024 onwards. Glendinning Academy will become a school for pupils aged from 7 – 16 years.
There is high demand for places at the primary and secondary phase. We believe the range of needs presented by the pupils at Glendinning means that their KS5 education requires a broad subject offer and this breadth would not be provided at Glendinning Academy, in terms of both capacity and funding.

A broad KS5 offer includes:
Academic courses, including A levels in a wide range of subjects
Vocational courses, including BTEC in practical subjects with specialist facilities
Life Skills and preparation for adulthood
