Women and girls who live, work, study in and socialise in Exeter are invited to share their views and insights into how they experience the city through an online map-based survey and public pop-up events. The study focuses on experiences related to public transport, walking, wheeling, and cycling.
The map-based online survey can be found at https://exetersafety.commonplace.is/ and will be open for eight weeks from 2 November 2026 – 28 December 2026. It asks women and girls to identify places in the city and share their experiences and perceptions of safety at each location. Opinions are welcomed from a wide range of people, so that the findings can lead to meaningful, long-term changes to create a safer and more inclusive city.
People can also share their experiences in person at a series of pop-up and targeted events across Exeter, which will be confirmed and advertised in due course.
The findings from the map and events will be analysed to understand what changes could be made to improve the everyday experiences of women and girls across Exeter. People will be asked about locations, routes, travel patterns and how they move through the city, and any experiences that influence feelings of safety.
The overall study is being led by Devon County Council (DCC), in partnership with WSP, and is supported by key local partners within the project Working Group, including Exeter City Council (ECC), InExeter Business Improvement District (InExeter BID), Devon and Cornwall Police, the University of Exeter and Exeter College. This project builds on existing work led by the InExeter BID to improve safety within the nighttime economy and supports ECC’s Safer Exeter objectives.
