Consultation:
Boasley Cross Primary School: proposal to extend age range
Proposal:
The board of Trustees and Leadership of the Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust (DMAT) are proposing to lower the age range of the school from 4-11 to 2-11 years of age effective from 01.09.24.
Background:
The team at Boasley Cross Primary school are delighted that the school is growing in numbers. It is important that the school offers high quality Early Years provision, especially as there is a shortage of services in the area. Leaders and Trustees would like to hear your feedback on the proposed provision. This would start with provision for children aged 3 years old from Autumn term 2024 with a capacity of 3 children per session. The children would be part of the Reception, KS1 class with additional staffing to specifically facilitate the Nursery aged children. There will also be no change to the number of Reception places available for children as the Planned Admissions Number for the school is 10. If the proposal is approved by the Regions Group, the school will then be able to facilitate Nursery provision for children aged 2 years to 4 years old and be included on the school’s roll. This will not affect the net capacity of the school, nor will this put pressure on existing classroom space for school aged children. Parents and carers would still need to make a separate application to Devon County Council for a place in Reception and the school would support and assist parents and carers with this transition.
The main benefits to this proposal are as follows:
• Providing a service for the local community that they would otherwise have to travel for,
• Securing the long-term stability of Reception numbers,
• Delivering a high-quality Early Years curriculum to support children’s development from a younger age,
• Access to free school meals provision for eligible families.
The Process:
Trustees must send a summary of responses to the consultation with the Tier 1 Application Form to the South West Regions Group, which is part of the Department for Education, where a decision will be made considering the consultation responses. If it is agreed that the proposal will be implemented, the proposed date for the provision will be from 01.09.24. although this will depend on how quickly the decision is made.
