Building Control nominations bring recognition for North Devon projects

Two North Devon building projects have received recognition at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Excellence Awards following their nomination by NMD Building Control.
At an award ceremony last month (24 May), the refurbished and extended Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) at North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) and the Mount Sandford Green housing development in Barnstaple received awards. The South West regional LABC awards give recognition to the sustainability of buildings, their innovative design and attention to detail in relation to building control matters.
North Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT), who run the hospital received the award for Best Public Service Building, designed by the David Wilson Partnership and built by Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure Ltd. The Mount Sanford Green housing development was highly commended in the high volume housing category, designed by Woodward Smith Chartered Architects and built by Loosemore Chartered Builders.
Building Control Manager at NMD Building Control, Mike Tucker, says: “It’s great news for everyone involved in these projects that the work has been rightfully recognised and fantastic that we can help deliver such high quality developments in the North Devon area. These two projects stood out due to the close team work shown throughout design and construction.”
Head of Estates at NDHT, Kevin Ward, says: “This award is the icing on the cake of what has been a fantastic project to improve the environment in A&E for our patients. Whilst A&E is never a great place to find yourself visiting, our patients are now benefiting from a more welcoming, comfortable and spacious area. This was only made possible thanks to the hard work of staff across NDHT and our strong relationships with David Wilson Partnership and Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure Ltd. We would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everyone.”
Director at Loosemore Chartered Builders, Nick Loosemore, says: “My team and I at Loosemores are delighted to have received recognition for all the hard work that has been put in to achieving this accolade from the LABC. We have worked closely with NMD Building Control and our architects Woodward Smith to produce innovative fresh designs, delivering high levels of insulation and sustainability which has been warmly received by our purchasers. We at Loosemores pride ourselves in combining traditional skills with modern sustainable construction and as our strapline at Mount Sandford Green states “Modern living naturally”.”
To achieve a nomination for an award, a number of criteria have to be met. In addition to demonstrating that the buildings meet and excel in all building control compliance matters, it was shown that the buildings were of a sustainable design and construction, achieved high performance in all aspects of energy use and robustness, fully met all client expectations and were delivered on time and on budget with the involvement of the local community.
Following this award the A&E Department at NDDH will now go through to the national awards taking place in November.
