Here to help following flooding
Posted on: 22 January 2018
North Devon Council is reminding residents that it is here to help following the floods across the district yesterday (Sunday 21 January 2018).
If you have been affected by flooding the council can offer assistance with public health matters, building control, and housing. Anybody who is unable to return to their home as a result of flooding, or damage caused by it, should contact their customer services team for advice and help. Residents whose properties are likely to be suffering from structural defects that pose an immediate risk should contact the council’s building control team, who will assess the danger and offer advice on how to make the building safe. Local food businesses are being advised to dispose of any food that has become unfit as a result of the flooding, and to contact the council’s public health team, who may be able to assist by issuing a certificate for insurance purposes.
Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor Des Brailey, says: “I would like to thank everyone for their hard work yesterday and in the days to come. Our communities have worked together fantastically, keeping each other safe alongside the council and the partner agencies we work with. Our officers have been working as part of a multi-agency team, including the emergency services and other authorities, to coordinate and prioritise resources and our response.
“We are here to offer our support so please don’t suffer alone; if you have been flooded, tell us. We may also be able to signpost residents to other agencies that can offer support, as well as notifying regional and national agencies about the scale of what has happened in North Devon. This may help to unlock further funding for the area and our households.”
Homes may still be at risk of flooding, so please take steps to plan, prepare and protect your home from further damage and potential risk to residents. General information on protecting your home is available on the Met Office website. This site contains current contacts for householders, including advice from the National Flood Forum on dealing with insurance companies.
Devon County Council may be able to offer funding to residents whose homes are at risk of flooding through the Property Level Resilience (PLR) Grant Scheme, which enables home owners to apply for up to £5,000 to carry out a survey of the property, identifying the required flooding resilience measures, and to purchase the recommended measures. More information is available on Devon County Council’s website.
