An organisation that provides fly fishing sessions for people suffering or recovering from breast cancer has been awarded a Community Councillor Grant from North Devon Council.

South West Fishing for Life has been awarded a total of £825 from the Community Grant funds of Councillors John Patrinos, Frank Beiderman, Andrea Davis, Jackie Flynn, Dick Jones, Ian Roome, John Moore, John Mathews, Brian Moores, Geoff Fowler, Caroline Chugg, Walter White, Joe Tucker, Jasmine Chesters and Richard Edgell.

The grant is being used to provide fishing equipment, banners, pay fishery fees and to help with therapeutic fishing sessions.

Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing at North Devon Council, Councillor Dick Jones, says: “I’m pleased to have contributed to the grant awarded to South West Fishing for Life to help towards the equipment and free sessions they provide. Our Community Councillor Grant scheme is a great opportunity to provide groups and organisations within the district with a funding boost for the valuable work that they do which means so much to our communities.”

Secretary for South West Fishing for Life, Gillian Payne, says: We would like to thank the councillors who have contributed funds to help us start group number nine. The fly fishing sessions are free to all people who are suffering, recovering or living with breast cancer. Qualified coaches give their time as do all the volunteers, to teach the members how to fish. It is a special ME time for the members to relax, have fun, move on with their lives and laugh again.”

Through the Community Councillor Grant Scheme, each North Devon councillor has £1,000 to support projects and services run by community or voluntary groups and not for profit organisations each year. Youth clubs, toddler groups, sports clubs, museums, village halls and environmental groups have all benefited from grants in the past for running costs, start-up costs, costs towards a new facility or refurbishing an existing one, towards an event or equipment for a new project or service.
