There are new, fully funded courses about speech, language and communications needs available to teachers across Devon schools this term. These courses aim to increase your understanding and awareness of speech, language and communications needs (SLCN) and their impact on learning for primary and secondary age children.

New SLT for Schools online course from Marjon University

The SLT for Schools online learning course has been created by Marjon University’s specialist team of speech and language therapy experts. The course aims to improve your understanding of children with SLCN and speech and language development needs.

The training includes specialist content covering social, emotional, mental health and communication. It was developed using funding from NHS England and is free to users.

You can access your free, reusable online training directly from the Marjon website, set a schedule that fits your needs, and learn in your own time.

New tools to help you identify language needs webinars from Devon County Council

Our graduated response is a way of meeting needs through effective implementation of support before moving a child or young person onto higher levels of support. As part of this teachers and SENCos are required to identify language needs in students.

We have created four short webinars for primary and secondary phases that aim to support you to do just that. The videos look at some of the tools that we find useful in exploring young people’s language strengths and needs, and tools that are useful for teachers and SENCos in planning support for students with identified needs.

These free recorded webinars contain lots of resources to help teachers and SENCos to identify needs early and plan the support the child or young person needs to thrive in the classroom every day.

SLCN training courses from Devon Education Services

Devon schools can also invest in taking their SLCN knowledge and skills further with a range of training offers from Devon Education Services (Devon County Council’s traded services for schools and academies). These courses range from 90-minute workshops to whole-day INSET days. Courses can be delivered in schools and education settings, and some are also available online.

The Good Practice for Speech, Language and Communication packages for primary and secondary schools also include an action-planning meeting to see how to put the training into practice in your setting.
