Job description

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced communications professional to join the Communications Team at Devon County Council.

At a time when trust and clear communications have never been more important, local authorities have a crucial role in delivering effective messages to our communities.

This is a chance to use your knowledge, skills and experience to be a crucial part of this work and to influence and shape communication that improves the lives of the residents of Devon.

As a senior communications officer with an expertise in marketing, you’ll be responsible for managing campaigns that support the strategic responsibilities, vision and common purposes of the Authority.

You will be responsible for supporting service areas across the council with their marketing; working alongside the wider communications team and external agencies to deliver targeted campaigns and utilising your skills to create compelling messages, reaching a diverse range of communities.

We need you to have a broad experience in paid and organic, digital and traditional marketing channels. There will also be opportunities to support events, including representing the council at Devon County Show. You’ll need to bring a creative approach to planning whilst being an exceptionally organised project manager.

It is an opportunity to work with a friendly, skilled and professional team who share a passion for making local government better.

What we can offer

We actively support and encourage creativity and innovation within our team. If you have a passion for delivering powerful campaigns that inspire action and influence positive change then joining us could be the perfect opportunity for you.

We have responsibility for developing the external and internal narrative(s) for one of the largest organisations in the South West and we pride ourselves as being a proactive, forward-thinking local authority.

You will be part of a friendly team, working alongside colleagues that include press and media, social media, email marketing, web developers, content designers, user interface designers and internal communication experts.

As the largest employer in Devon, Devon County Council can also offer additional benefits such as support with, and access to, flexible working, personal development, relevant events and training, and enrolment in the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Of course, Devon is also a great place to live and work! With two coastlines, beautiful and world-class landscapes (for example Dartmoor, Exmoor, the Jurassic Coast), the vibrant city of Exeter and only two hours from London by train, Devon provides a fantastic quality of life. However, we are also prepared to consider remote working for this role from elsewhere in the UK, but note that there will be occasions when the post-holder will be required to be present in Devon.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for an inquisitive and passionate communications expert; someone who loves to get under the skin of a project and turn the objectives of the service into impactful messages for the market.

We need someone innovative, who is always on their toes to find the most effective channels and who loves digging into data to keep learning from their results.

Our perfect candidate will be an exceptionally organised multi-tasker, as well as a team-player with the ability to work collaboratively. You’ll thrive working on multiple projects and enjoy translating the specific needs of each area into actionable briefs for agencies. We need someone at a senior officer level who can take the lead on projects whilst also supporting junior members of the team.

The ideal candidate will need to be able to work effectively and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and with teams across the authority and partnerships. You will also need to be able to work independently, using creative skills to adapt and problem solve.

This is an exciting time to be part of the Communications Team at Devon County Council and offers an opportunity to help deliver great outcomes for the organisation, partners, and ultimately for the people of Devon
