Job title: Area Co-ordinator

Area of work: Learn Devon (Adult and Community Learning)

My career started with Devon County Council in May 2018 when I had just arrived back in the UK after working in the Caribbean. I previously worked in HM Prisons, the NHS and as a civil servant for many years, so I was very keen to find a position within Devon County Council.

I initially joined the MASH team at County Hall and then I moved to a project support role with Learn Devon. I was involved in a project that would help adults upskill or retrain via a newly created online learning platform (who would have known at that time, that this would now be useful during the COVID-19 pandemic).

In September 2019, I moved away from project support and into area coordination, still working with Learn Devon. I love my job and I get great satisfaction knowing that I am helping adults get the best opportunities in life by helping them learn new skills in a friendly and safe environment. They are able to excel in skills that they have never thought achievable. This in turn, promotes their wellbeing and self-confidence too.

I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work for Devon County Council. My colleagues within Learn Devon have been supportive, approachable and welcoming. I can honestly say that my colleagues are the best that I have ever worked with. The flexible working policy allows me to manage my own time and this helps to give me and my family an excellent work/life balance.
