I joined Learn Devon, Devon County Council’s adult education service, in September 2019. Having only ever worked in private sector roles I found the transition to working at the local council very pleasant and refreshing. My manager and my colleagues have been supportive and provided me with lots of guidance when I started, giving me plenty of time to gain a good understanding of the systems and processes at Devon County Council and at Learn Devon.
I enjoy my post as Communications and Marketing Co-ordinator as I feel I am helping people in our local communities improve their lives, by helping them discover the various opportunities Learn Devon’s adult learning and community courses can give them. I enjoy that I can be creative in my role as I look for new, engaging ways to promote our courses and communicate with prospective learners in our communities.
The Coronavirus outbreak has put an even greater emphasis on our work at Learn Devon, as more and more people in Devon are looking to gain new qualifications in order to increase their job opportunities, or are looking for wellbeing courses to help improve their mental health and combat social isolation. Since the outbreak of the pandemic the County Council has been very supportive in assisting everyone transition to home working, and our teams have valued more than ever having secure and stable jobs within local government.
Moving to Devon has proven to be a very positive change; especially now that we all appreciate being closer to nature. Everything here is within easy access and people are friendly.
