{"id":2538,"date":"2022-01-28T10:47:39","date_gmt":"2022-01-28T10:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/educationfinance\/?p=2538"},"modified":"2022-01-28T10:47:39","modified_gmt":"2022-01-28T10:47:39","slug":"governance-compliance-76-vat-charges-on-school-water-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/governance-compliance-76-vat-charges-on-school-water-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"Governance &amp; Compliance 76: VAT charges on school water bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Please note the following from the VAT Team regarding VAT on water bills.<\/p>\n<p>It has recently come to the attention of the VAT Team that a Devon Maintained School, has in error been charged VAT on their water bills (From South West Water).<\/p>\n<p>VAT is only payable on the water bills of businesses involved in the following industries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chemicals<\/li>\n<li>Construction<\/li>\n<li>Engineering<\/li>\n<li>Manufacturing<\/li>\n<li>Mining<\/li>\n<li>Textiles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Water supplies to domestic and non-industrial customers should be zero rated.<\/p>\n<p>Can we please ask that schools check their water bills, if any bills include a VAT charge, the school should either<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>contact the supplier to get the error corrected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>email a copy of the bill to the VAT helpdesk and the VAT team will contact the supplier on the schools behalf, the VAT Team contact address is supplied here: <a href=\"mailto:vathelpdesk-mailbox@devon.gov.uk\">vathelpdesk-mailbox@devon.gov.uk<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Please note the following from the VAT Team regarding VAT on water bills.
