The Mandatory Qualification is part of the statutory requirements for qualified teacher status set out in The Education (School Teachers&#8217; Qualifications) (England) Regulations 2003. Qualified teachers carry out a central role in the education of children and young people with sensory impairments from birth, working in homes, early years settings, schools and post 16 settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of specialist teachers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children and young people with MSI face unique challenges to learning that can need specialist knowledge and understanding. Sense, the charity who support people with complex disabilities including those who are deafblind, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland,\u00a0considers that all children and young people with MSI must receive specialist educational support from a qualified teacher of children and young people with MSI (QTMSI). Professionals working in advisory or peripatetic roles should also hold the appropriate mandatory qualification.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">QTMSIs ensure that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All children and young people with MSI receive support from teachers who hold the mandatory qualification in MSI, and from Advisory Teacher for Visual Impairment (ATVI) and Teachers of the Deaf (ToD), where appropriate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They work closely with schools or settings to coproduce inclusive teaching and learning approaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They help develop and support the implementation of strategies to promote children and young people&#8217;s social inclusion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaboration with families and carers, school and health staff is essential to develop strategies that promote independent learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They work in partnerships with families to make sure that expectations and approaches are consistent between home and school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specialist assessments are completed with a child or young person to co-create their learning environments, ensuring they feel heard and included in decisions that impact their education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Functional sensory assessments are used to assess vision, hearing, and tactile sense.
