{"id":8159,"date":"2022-06-23T13:43:58","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T12:43:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta.devon.gov.uk\/supportforschools\/?page_id=8159"},"modified":"2026-02-24T10:32:58","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T10:32:58","slug":"the-role-of-advisory-teacher-of-learners-with-vision-impairment-atvi","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/sensory-and-or-physical\/visual-impairment\/the-role-of-advisory-teacher-of-learners-with-vision-impairment-atvi\/","title":{"rendered":"The role of Advisory Teacher of Visual Impairment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Advisory Teachers of Vision Impairment (ATVI) carry out a central role in the education of children and young people with vision impairment from birth, working in homes, early years settings, schools and post 16 settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Managing requests for access from health, education and social care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deliver and promote the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/sensory-and-or-physical\/visual-impairment\/curriculum-framework-for-children-and-young-people-with-vision-impairment\/\">curriculum framework for visual impairment<\/a>, focusing on smart outcomes, specialist provision and common use of language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing direct support to children aged 0-4 at home to support early development through play and learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carry out specialist assessments to identify individual need.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide advice to educational settings including nurseries, special schools and Post 16 settings on appropriate outcomes and provision needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specialist vision impairment training provided.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching specialist skills, for example Braille, the use of specialist equipment and ICT e.g. shortcut keys.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training for staff on how to adapt and modify teaching and learning resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide advice on exam access arrangements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liaising and joint working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/educationandfamilies\/guide\/rovic-service-supporting-children-visual-sensory-impairment\/contact-us\/\">ROVIC team<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting children and young people through key transition stages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In recognition of the above skills ATVIs are required to hold a specialist mandatory qualification (MQ) which addresses a wide range of specialist outcomes.
