{"id":7501,"date":"2022-06-14T15:19:12","date_gmt":"2022-06-14T14:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta.devon.gov.uk\/supportforschools\/?page_id=7501"},"modified":"2026-02-24T15:10:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T15:10:06","slug":"passive-intervention-and-prevention-strategies-pips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/social-emotional-and-mental-health\/passive-intervention-and-prevention-strategies-pips\/","title":{"rendered":"Passive Intervention and Prevention Strategies (PIPS)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The aim of Passive Intervention and Prevention (PIPS) training is to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>enable schools and other settings to develop a consistent, acceptable team approach to managing behaviour in a manner that maintains positive relationships and continues to care for pupils\/clients at times of crisis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide a process of repair and reflection for staff and children<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increase staff awareness concerning the importance of recording and reporting, monitoring and evaluating, all incidents involving positive handling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Expected outcomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>experience and practice the skills of guiding, safe touch and holding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explore how these acts of care combine with calming, diffusing and problem solving strategies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experience passive intervention strategies designed to follow rather than force movement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>identify key elements for developing a consistent team approach to managing challenge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increase awareness of the importance of recording and reporting, monitoring and evaluating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>develop an increased sense of confidence at times of crisis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision to intervene physically or not will always be a professional judgement based on ongoing risk assessment.
