wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-contextual-safeguarding\">What is Contextual Safeguarding?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Contextual Safeguarding is a recognition that children and young people may be at significant risk of harm due to external factors outside of the family home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All staff, but especially the designated safeguarding lead (and deputies) should consider whether children are at risk of abuse or exploitation in situations outside their families. Extra-familial harms take a variety of different forms and children can be vulnerable to multiple harms including (but not limited to) sexual abuse (including harassment and exploitation), domestic abuse in their own intimate relationships (teenage relationship abuse), criminal exploitation, serious youth violence, county lines, and radicalisation.<br>KCSiE<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"when-and-where-does-it-occur\">When and where does it occur?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Contextual Safeguarding recognises that the different relationships that young people form in their communities, schools and online can feature violence and abuse. In traditional systems we address this by intervening with families to increase their capacity to safeguard young people from harm and\/or relocating young people away from harmful contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Contextual Safeguarding system supports the development of approaches which disrupt\/change harmful extra-familial contexts rather than move families\/young people away from them. While parents\/carers are not in a position to change the nature of extra-familial contexts those who manage or deliver services in these spaces are; and they therefore become critical partners in the safeguarding agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-schools-need-to-do-if-they-have-concerns-regarding-contextual-safeguarding-risks-for-a-young-person\">What schools need to do if they have concerns regarding contextual safeguarding risks for a young person?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Devon and Plymouth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have the ASF (Adolescent Safety Framework) which is a framework and assessment process to identify risk associated with contextual safeguarding for children between the ages of 11 and 18. Professionals can undertake a Safer me assessment and then identify the best way to minimise any identified risk.
