{"id":5120,"date":"2022-03-04T12:19:52","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T12:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta.devon.gov.uk\/schoolssupport\/?page_id=5120"},"modified":"2026-04-17T14:26:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T13:26:03","slug":"educational-psychology-service","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/educational-psychology\/educational-psychology-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Educational Psychology Service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Educational Psychology Service (EPS) delivers high-quality education support services to schools and settings across Devon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How educational psychologists help children and young people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Educational psychologists (EPs) use specialist psychological knowledge and skills to promote the development, learning, achievement and well-being of children and young people from 0 \u2013 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes at least 8 years to train as an EP. The training includes an initial psychology degree, work with children and completing a doctorate in Educational Psychology. Ongoing training and development is a professional requirement. This means that we base our independent advice on extensive up-to-date knowledge of research and good practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How educational psychologists&#8217; skills are used in Devon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Schools and settings engage us to use psychological knowledge and skills in specific ways depending upon what is needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each of our EPs completes a range of work to achieve different purposes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some EPs also have specialisms in areas such as Early Years or Relational Practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The EPS is organised into three locality teams across Devon: Exeter and East Devon, North and Mid Devon, and South and West Devon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each team provides a service to a group of learning communities and the children, young people and families who live there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/educational-psychology\/educational-psychology-service\/temporary-change-to-educational-psychology-ep-service-delivery-model\/psychology-works-consultation-package\/\">Most EP work is consultative.<\/a> This means that the EP meets with adults who know the child or young person well to agree action plans without the need to meet them, unless this is necessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our EPs are trusted professionals because they have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a passion for thinking about the perspective of children and young people and achieving best outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a friendly and approachable style so that they are good at connecting with people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a detailed understanding of child development, emotional health and wellbeing and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>substantial experience supporting children and young people in education from 0- 25 years of age<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>excellent knowledge of the current education system including the SEND legislation and Devon-specific processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>commitment to providing independent advice and working ethically based on the British Psychological Society Code of Ethics, Conduct and Professional Practice Guidelines (2018)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our EPs are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2022\/04\/HCPClogo.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5926\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2022\/04\/HCPClogo.png\" alt=\"Health and Care Professions Council logo\" width=\"195\" height=\"132\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Information for children and young people and parents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Devon EPS has made two short videos for <strong>children and young people<\/strong>, to explain what an educational psychologist does. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Children and young people<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This video for young people gives information for those of school or college age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have also produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4iOUriIEPrI&amp;t=3s\" rel=\"noopener\">short, easy-access version, which is ideal for younger children<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope that the videos help children be relaxed and enjoy their time with the educational psychologist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"What an Educational Psychologist does - a short video for young people from the Devon EP Service\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/4iOUriIEPrI?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
