For some children and young people, having these in front of them is easier than working from the board.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide squared paper<\/strong> to support children and young people to lay out calculations accurately.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncetm.org.uk\/features\/four-ways-to-create-better-mathematical-talk-in-your-classroom\/\" rel=\"noopener\">sentence starters and stem sentences<\/a><\/strong> to support the use of full sentences.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pre-teach the language used to access maths lessons<\/strong> &#8211; for example, equal, altogether.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Play games that involve the recall of number facts<\/strong> in a small group, so that children and young people have regular opportunities to develop fluency without time pressure.\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nrich-staging.maths.org\/10847\" rel=\"noopener\">Number Facts &#8211; Nrich<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nrich.maths.org\/9465\" rel=\"noopener\">Secondary Interactive Games and Challenges &#8211; Nrich<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/devoneducationservices.co.uk\/products\/321\/\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;No Nonsense Maths&#8217;<\/a> materials<\/strong> to support fluency in recall of number facts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide 1:1 precision teaching<\/strong> (for example, of number facts).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plan pre-teaching based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/school-effectiveness\/teaching-and-learning\/curriculum\/mathematics\/teaching-resources\/connective-model-and-cpa-approach\/\">the Connective Model<\/a> of maths to support understanding.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide 1:1 or small group support<\/strong>. For example &#8211;\n<ul>\n<li>Use the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stem.org.uk\/elibrary\/resource\/29225\" rel=\"noopener\">Supporting children with gaps in their mathematical understanding<\/a>&#8216; materials. These were aimed at children and young people in Key Stage 2.<\/li>\n<li>Use &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/devoneducationservices.co.uk\/events\/81a1884c-ecce-4329-91f8-b1c9b98a9a96\/Maths-intervention-programme-spot-on-with-number\" rel=\"noopener\">Spot on with number<\/a>,&#8217; 1:1 or small group (up to four children). This is for Key Stage 1 children with moderate difficulties in maths, or older children and young people with specific difficulties, including dyscalculia.<\/li>\n<li>Use &#8216;From Counting to Calculating,&#8217; a small group intervention to support children who lie just above the bottom 5% in Year 2 and for children older than this who are working significantly behind age related expectations.<\/li>\n<li>Use &#8216;Making a difference: developing additive reasoning,&#8217; an intervention to support children and young people with developing conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction, building on &#8216;From Counting to Calculating,&#8217; and covering the expectations in the National Curriculum up to the end of Year 4.<\/li>\n<li>Use &#8216;Fair and Equal: developing multiplicative reasoning&#8217;, an intervention to support children and young people with developing conceptual understanding of multiplication and division, covering the key ideas related to multiplicative reasoning in the National Curriculum up to the end of Year 4, with a few elements from Year 5.<\/li>\n<li>Use &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/devoneducationservices.co.uk\/events\/848f2642-fb02-4ee8-9991-b2e45723dc27\/Success-at-arithmetic-Y5-8\" rel=\"noopener\">Success at arithmetic<\/a>,&#8217;
