text when reading.<\/li>\n<li>Isn&#8217;t able to adjust their pronunciation of a correctly decoded non-word to match a word in their spoken vocabulary (this is sometimes called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/public\/fifeliteracy\/uploads\/sites\/14033\/2023\/08\/02104513\/Set-for-Variability.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">set for variability<\/a>&#8216; and is key Share these words with parents so that they can practise at home too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide opportunities to promote fluency in word reading<\/strong>. For example, play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readsuccessfully.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Trugs or Trugs Tricky Words<\/a> in a pair or small group, or use <a href=\"https:\/\/devoncc.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/s\/PublicDocs\/Education\/EWHxbRgUGrVKpJXdduuhT1EBy7FOQr8jBHXq62lLUrBrqw?e=gclcnj\" rel=\"noopener\">Speed Word sheets<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide 1:1 precision teaching<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/cognition-and-learning\/devon-spld\/\">individualised reading intervention<\/a><\/strong> (training is provided by Devon&#8217;s SpLD team).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide a reading ruler<\/strong>, if the child or young person feels that this makes reading easier. The SpLD team advises that yellow and blue are the best colours to try first.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ensure that the child or young person reads with a skilled adult as regularly as possible<\/strong>, and that their reading practice book is at an instructional level (90-94% of words read accurately).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Explicitly help children and young people adjust the pronunciation of correctly decoded but mispronounced words<\/strong>, through using prompting. For example, if they read cow as &#8216;coe&#8217; (with a long o sound), tap the &#8216;ow&#8217; digraph and say &#8216;What other sound could this be? What word does that make? Does that make sense?&#8217; If the child or young person doesn&#8217;t know the sound, tell them.
