taught.<\/li>\n<li>Isn&#8217;t able to blend sounds together to make a word. For example, they can&#8217;t blend c &#8211; a &#8211; t together to make &#8216;cat&#8217;, or h &#8211; igh together to make &#8216;high&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t segment spoken words into phonemes. For example, they cannot segment &#8216;sit&#8217; into s &#8211; i &#8211; t.<\/li>\n<li>Spelling is not phonetically plausible* &#8211; they may miss out sounds in words. For example, they might write &#8216;spent&#8217; as &#8216;spet.&#8217;\n<p>*Phonetically plausible spelling refers to the ability of a word to be recognised for its phonetic sounds, even though it is spelt correctly. This concept is important in teaching spelling, as children often create phonetically plausible versions of words before learning the correct spellings. For example, play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readsuccessfully.com\/trugs-shop-2\/trugs-stage-0\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Trugs 0<\/a> in a pair or small group\u00a0or use <a href=\"https:\/\/devoncc.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/s\/PublicDocs\/Education\/ERd4QZ370_xNjyMI3tYtMRkBNbCDiPpG-WFgwBTHxIhM_Q?e=dQooaJ\" rel=\"noopener\">Speed Sound sheets<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide 1:1 precision teaching<\/strong> (of recognition and recall of GPCs).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trial <a href=\"https:\/\/phonicbooks.co.uk\/products\/phonics-explained-how-to-teach-blending\" rel=\"noopener\">methods for teaching and practising blending<\/a><\/strong> that reduce the load on the child or young person&#8217;s working memory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide opportunities to manipulate the sounds in words<\/strong>, ideally alongside print (for example with letter tiles), as activities that target <a href=\"https:\/\/phonicbooks.co.uk\/blogs\/what-is\/what-is-phonemic-awareness\" rel=\"noopener\">phonemic awareness<\/a> are likely to be most effective when they involve print. For example, play the <a href=\"https:\/\/devoncc.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/s\/PublicDocs\/Education\/EZdoZDwytnNNgv-H6l10Kf8BgTjzxZziwdC4kdjZ9kczew?e=xCw98Y\" rel=\"noopener\">phoneme frame game<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talesfromoutsidetheclassroom.com\/word-chains\/\" rel=\"noopener\">word chains<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide additional support for children and young people to develop their phonological awareness<\/strong>. In EY and KS1, use the assessments and resources in &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/67124a19b40d67191077b36e\/Letters_and_Sounds_-_Phase_One.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Letters and Sounds&#8217; Phase 1<\/a>&#8216; to plan provision to develop phonological awareness.
