effective.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Provide individual or small group support that is aligned to your school&#8217;s handwriting programme<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide further targeted intervention to support handwriting, <\/strong>for example <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedyslexiashop.co.uk\/products\/write-from-the-start-a-unique-programme-to-develop-the-fine-motor-and-perceptual-skills-necessary-for-effective-handwriting\" rel=\"noopener\">Write From The Start<\/a>. Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letterjoin.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Letter Join&#8217;s<\/a> KS2 recovery programme or &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Speed-Up-Kinaesthetic-Programme-Handwriting\/dp\/1855033860\" rel=\"noopener\">Speed Up!<\/a>&#8216; for children and young people in KS2 and above.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make available a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenandfamilyhealthdevon.nhs.uk\/resources\/pencil-grips-tips-and-advice\/\" rel=\"noopener\">pens, pencils and grips<\/a><\/strong>, and help the child or young person to trial these to see which they prefer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consider the use of a <a href=\"https:\/\/schneiderpen.com\/en_uk\/cartridge-rollerballs\/base-senso-blue-turquoise-m-4004675171481\/\" rel=\"noopener\">light-up pen<\/a>, or a 2H pencil<\/strong> if the child or young person is applying excessive pressure when writing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consider the use of a weighted pen or pencil, or a B\/2B pencil<\/strong> if a child or young person doesn&#8217;t press hard enough when writing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use a writing slope<\/strong> (a piece of Dycem will help paper and books from slipping).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide books or paper with handwriting guidelines<\/strong>. Use a highlighter to support the child or young person to generalise this to writing on standard lined paper. A <a href=\"https:\/\/bubblehandwriting.wordpress.com\/2022\/10\/27\/what-is-the-bubble-writing-handwriting-scaffold\/\" rel=\"noopener\">bubble handwriting<\/a> template can also help with letter size and spacing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/nha-handwriting.org.uk\/handwriting\/providing-help\/apps-and-tips-for-teaching-or-helping-with-handwriting\/\" rel=\"noopener\">handwriting apps<\/a> and a stylus to practise letter formation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ensure that the child or young person is in a proper position for table work<\/strong> (feet flat on the floor, shoulders relaxed, and forearms supported on the desk), and that their chair and table is the correct size for them. A <a href=\"https:\/\/yoohoo.org.uk\/blogs\/news\/why-do-speech-and-language-therapists-recommend-visual-task-lists-or-sequencing-strips-what-do-they-achieve\" rel=\"noopener\">visual sequence strip<\/a> can provide a simple reminder of good posture for handwriting. The National Handwriting Association&#8217;s &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/nha-handwriting.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/woocommerce_uploads\/2018\/11\/good-practice-for-handwriting-%E2%80%93-a-toolkit-for-teachers_1.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Good Practice for Handwriting<\/a>&#8216; contains further guidance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Support the child or young person to leave spaces between words:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>check that they understand that sentences are made up of words. Practise clapping the words in a sentence.
