{"id":31020,"date":"2025-03-11T10:57:41","date_gmt":"2025-03-11T10:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/?page_id=31020"},"modified":"2025-03-11T11:18:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-11T11:18:13","slug":"a-graduated-approach-to-supporting-attendance-and-ebsa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/inclusion\/ebsa\/a-graduated-approach-to-supporting-attendance-and-ebsa\/","title":{"rendered":"A graduated approach to supporting attendance and EBSA\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Taking a graduated approach to EBSA means that difficulties can be identified early and the right support can be put in place for a pupil.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To support <strong>all pupils<\/strong> with their attendance schools should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be curious and concerned about changes to attendance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>make reasonable adjustments to policies and procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>work in partnership with families, so that schools have a sense of school belonging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some pupils may need <strong>enhanced adaptations and support<\/strong> which may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>include time specific, targeted interventions, including a personalised stepped support plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>require support from external agencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A small number of pupils may need specialist attendance support, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>multi-agency support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support outlined in an education, health and care (EHC) plan, or via Section 19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<figure class=\"dcc-infographic-block\" id=\"block_acf-block-67cad6ac275d2\"><img decoding=\"async\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"longdesc-return-31274\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings?longdesc=31274&#038;referrer=31020\" aria-describedby=\"longdesc-link-wp-image-31274\" width=\"909\" height=\"841\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2025\/03\/the-graduated-approach-attendance-support.svg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-31274\" alt=\"Graphic demonstrating the graduated approach.\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings?longdesc=31274&amp;referrer=31020\" id=\"longdesc-return-31274\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>A graduated response (or graduated approach) recognises that there is a continuum of needs which pupils experience. Whilst a pupil\u2019s needs will remain the same, the steps a setting will need to take to address these needs will increase, via a \u2018response to intervention\u2019 approach. By monitoring if a pupil makes the expected progress following an intervention, will determine if further steps are needed to meet their needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the majority of pupils a whole-school, OAIP approach will be sufficient to meet their needs.
