{"id":24857,"date":"2024-04-17T12:27:55","date_gmt":"2024-04-17T11:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings-new\/?page_id=24857"},"modified":"2024-12-11T16:51:14","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T16:51:14","slug":"parents","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/sensory-and-or-physical\/visual-impairment\/parents\/","title":{"rendered":"Parents"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When working with learners who have visual impairments (VI), the experiences and mental health of their parents\/carers are often overlooked as we focus on the child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although they may not always communicate it, parents or carers may be experiencing a range of emotions linked to a diagnosis or pre-diagnosis of visual impairment. Some examples of these are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>confusion regarding a visual diagnosis and medical terminology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>senses of guilt and bereavement \u2013parents may experience mourning over the future they had imagined for their child and their family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stress during times of transition (such as the move to secondary school)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a feeling that professionals make decisions about their child\u2019s needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduced family wellbeing with changes to parenting style, resulting from ongoing stress, anxiety and\/or depression<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How we support parents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sharing our contact details e.g. via reports so that parents can speak to us easily.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work in partnership with parents and other professionals to ensure a shared understanding of success, aspirations and high expectations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A clearly explained path towards targets and milestones \u2013 such as academic progress targets or developmental milestones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guidance and transparency through processes e.g. statutory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signposting to supportive groups and networks, such as parents\u2019 groups on social media and organised events for learners with VI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need any information please get in touch with your Advisory Teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grants available<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Powell Family Foundation provide grants to vision impaired children, young people and adults aged 25 and under.
