It lays the foundation for children\u2019s future learning, development and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can create an inclusive approach through policies, training, curriculum design, and your strategy to meet the needs of the children in your care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inclusive practices are not to be applied solely to those children who fall under the protective characteristics, it\u2019s a setting-wide approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show that children under 5 can understand messages and ideas about race and infants as young as 6 months can see differences in skin colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"equality-duty\">Equality duty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/equality-act-2010-guidance\" rel=\"noopener\">Equality Act 2010<\/a> outlines your setting\u2019s responsibilities in relation to the protected characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Age<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gender reassignment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marriage and civil partnership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pregnancy and maternity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Race<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Religion and belief<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sex and sexual orientation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst giving due regard to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eliminating discrimination, harassment, victimisation, and any other prohibited conduct.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advancing quality of opportunity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fostering good relations between people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To meet your equality duty you should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have a clear <a href=\"https:\/\/devoneducationservices.co.uk\/products\/2694\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Equality policy<\/a>, outlining your Equality statement and guiding principles.\u00a0 It is useful to have parent\/guardian input in the review of any policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure a fair and accessible recruitment process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decide and publish (on your website) your <a href=\"https:\/\/devoneducationservices.co.uk\/products\/2694\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Equality Duty objectives<\/a>. \u00a0Usually around three objectives on areas your setting will be developing and improving on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review and publish your data annually on how you are meeting your Equality duty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At least every 4 years review your Equality Duty objectives \u2013 looking at data and the impact of your actions.\u00a0 Then set new objectives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You should also be reporting incidents of bullying, prejudice and racism (BPRI) to the Local authority.\u00a0 You can view the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/inclusion\/bpriresource\/\">BPRI resource<\/a> to better understand incidents as well as using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartsurvey.co.uk\/s\/ReportingBPRI\/\" rel=\"noopener\">online reporting platform<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"404\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2024\/03\/Nursery-children-in-a-row.png\" alt=\"Nursery children sitting in a row\" class=\"wp-image-24691\" style=\"width:340px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2024\/03\/Nursery-children-in-a-row.png 404w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2024\/03\/Nursery-children-in-a-row-300x218.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 404px) 100vw, 404px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/article>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"checklist\"><strong>Checklist<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This checklist outlines strategies to help with your inclusive practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have a <strong>Healthy relationships week<\/strong> which looks at positive healthy relationships and an understanding that we are all unique.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review your <strong>reading list<\/strong> and the books that are available to your children.&nbsp; Do they reflect the world, do they include ethnically diverse children, children with different family structures, or children with disabilities?&nbsp; Books for Topics has a great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksfortopics.com\/booklists\/topics\/diversity-inclusion\/diverse-inclusive-books-for-eyfs\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reading list<\/a> for EYFS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be mindful of the potential of systematic racism in children\u2019s reading books.&nbsp; Does the book you are about to use describe black or brown negatively?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure <strong>Cultural Exchange<\/strong> is part of your curriculum. Consider how the environment enables children and their families to view diversity positively. This includes key cultural celebrations, and children experiencing music, tastes, and smells from around the world.&nbsp; You can also invite in adults and other children from the community to share their cultures. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/inclusion\/ethnically-diverse-education-achievement-service\/cultural-exchange-and-celebrations\/\">EMTAS website<\/a> has key resources to help you with Cultural Exchange.&nbsp; This forms part of Understanding the Word area of learning within the EYFS framework.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have toys that represent all types of people, including those with different skin colour and disabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure your staff have sufficient Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) training.&nbsp; This is crucial as an inclusive practice includes staff who are confident at recognising different forms of prejudice, stereotyping and racism as well as how to manage incidents.&nbsp; EMTAS can provide EDI training, please visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/devoneducationservices.co.uk\/products\/2549\/\" rel=\"noopener\">shop<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stay informed of updates, events and resources by signing up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/inclusion\/ethnically-diverse-education-achievement-service\/newsletter-aricles-and-reports\/\">EMTAS newsletter<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make reasonable adjustments to support your staff and the children in your care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When talking positively to children about diversity, be mindful of any inherent biases you may have \u2013 as children can pick up on these cues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid using skin colour as an identifying term, however, acknowledge that everyone is different.&nbsp; Don\u2019t claim not to see a person\u2019s skin colour, but rather ensure that children learn to take pride in their culture and history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware that ethnicity is not just about skin colour.&nbsp; Racism can occur towards Travellers and European children and families.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review your website, and graphics in publications \u2013 do they reflect the children and staff in your setting? &nbsp;&nbsp;Only 4% of Devon settings have a visibly ethnically diverse child on their home website page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"supporting-english-as-an-additional-language-eal-children\"><strong>Supporting English as an Additional Language (EAL) children<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An EAL child is a child who comes from a bilingual family.&nbsp; Including if only one of the parents is bilingual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/Pages\/ResponsePage.aspx?id=gzehjWjLP0S7S5l_d_1b-1rPb4n9a0tPpoCPW0PSyPFUNzVZSUszREdGS0lYTVVJRE9DSVNDTUpURiQlQCN0PWcu\" rel=\"noopener\">Book an interpreter<\/a> for any parent meetings, including the \u2018welcome\u2019 meeting.&nbsp; This is vital as often EYFS jargon doesn\u2019t translate well on apps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that parent\/guardian newsletters are translated.&nbsp; You can contact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.multilinguadevon.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Multiligua<\/a> who can do this for you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Familiarise yourself with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/inclusion\/ethnically-diverse-education-achievement-service\/english-as-an-additional-language-eal\/english-as-an-additional-language-eal-guidance-september-2023\/\">EMTAS EAL Guidance<\/a>.&nbsp;
