{"id":23834,"date":"2023-12-15T11:22:14","date_gmt":"2023-12-15T11:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings-new\/send\/areas-of-need\/sensory-and-or-physical\/visual-impairment\/screen-sharing\/"},"modified":"2024-12-11T16:41:16","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T16:41:16","slug":"screen-sharing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/sensory-and-or-physical\/visual-impairment\/technology\/screen-sharing\/","title":{"rendered":"Screen sharing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is \u2018screen sharing\u2019 or \u2018screen mirroring\u2019?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A method of sharing or \u2018mirroring\u2019 the content displayed on an interactive whiteboard to a device belonging to a vision impaired child or young person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Commonly used \u2018devices\u2019 are tablets or laptops.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is it beneficial to a vision impaired (VI) learner within a classroom setting?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Screen sharing can be used to provide vision impaired learners with improved access to information presented at distance by bringing it closer to their functional near vision.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Screen sharing gives access to \u2018live\u2019 aspects of whiteboard learning because annotations and notes made by teachers during lessons will appear on their device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Screen sharing can provide vision impaired learners with the freedom to position themselves more flexibly within a classroom whilst still being able to access whiteboard content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Screen sharing can boost inclusion for vision impaired learners by giving them independent access to the same content as their peers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">Technology is key in providing \u2018access to learning\u2019 and supporting the\u00a0<\/span><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">development of \u2018learning to access\u2019 skills.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">Where appropriate, it is also important that children and young people are\u00a0<\/span><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">empowered to be able to make informed choices about the most\u00a0<\/span><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">appropriate technology for them to use in different situations.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">Recognition should be given to the rapidly changing nature of this area\u00a0<\/span><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">due to technology advances. We need to provide opportunities for children\u00a0<\/span><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">and young people (and those advising and teaching them) to learn about\u00a0<\/span><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">the introduction of new technology and how it could potentially be of\u00a0<\/span><span data-scheme-color=\"@000000,,\" data-usefontface=\"true\" data-contrast=\"none\">benefit e.g. <\/span>building future skills for employment etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helps to reduce visual fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supports embedding Area 8: Technology: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnib.org.uk\/professionals\/health-social-care-education-professionals\/education-professionals\/curriculum-framework-for-children-and-young-people-with-vision-impairment\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXP66513605 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXP66513605 BCX9\">Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXP66513605 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXP66513605 BCX9\">with Vision Impairment (CFVI)<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is screen sharing accessed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A programme will be installed on both the teacher device (i.e. laptop or desktop computer) and also the pupil device (i.e. iPad or laptop).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are several free versions of this software that can be downloaded. Examples include: \u2018Teamviewer\u2019, \u2018Join-me\u2019, \u2018Anydesk\u2019, or \u2018Mirroring 360\u2019. (Please note that Devon County Council does not endorse any of these suggestions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are also paid versions, which are usually fairly inexpensive and may include additional features.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the programme is opened on the teacher device, it will generate a unique code. When this code is entered onto the pupil device, the mirroring of content will begin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently asked questions and troubleshooting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: \u2018The pupil in my class can move or change things on the main whiteboard and it disrupts my lessons\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A<\/strong>: There are usually settings on screen sharing programmes which render the pupil device as \u2018read-only\u2019 and therefore prevent the pupil from being able to influence the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: \u2018The screen share appears quite small on the pupil device, I\u2019m not sure they can see any better when using it\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A:The content on most screen sharing apps can be enlarged by using the pinch\/zoom function on the screen (if using a tablet or touch screen device).\u00a0 If using a laptop, the screen zoom function can be used.\u00a0 This will allow the pupil to enlarge the content and focus on what is visually relevant.\u00a0This should still work even when read-only settings are enabled (see above).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: \u2018My screen sharing programme is not working properly and I cannot sign in\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Some schools will have specialist filtering software to protect sensitive data.&nbsp; Your ICT technician should always be consulted in order to assess the suitability of certain programmes or to grant certain permissions where they may be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: \u2018During a whiteboard presentation, I need to access emails on my computer, but the pupil will be able to see them on their device via the screen share.&nbsp; How can I solve this problem so that the pupil can still see the desired slide?\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A<\/strong>:Consider teaching the pupil to take a \u2018screenshot\u2019 on their device so that they can continue working on the desired slide whilst you access emails or sensitive data:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; On an iPad, this can be done by simultaneously holding the power and volume down buttons.&nbsp; The copied screen can then be accessed in the photos app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; On a laptop press the Windows key and \u2018PrtScn\u2019 key simultaneously.&nbsp; The copied screen can then be accessed by opening the \u2018pictures\u2019 folder and then selecting \u2018screenshots\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Useful links<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact your ATVI for support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SEND ICT Guide to Screen Sharing, Use the following link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/sensory-and-or-physical\/send-it\/screen-sharing\/\">Screen sharing &#8211; Support for schools and settings (devon.gov.uk)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to create and join a session with TeamViewer Remote.
