{"id":22958,"date":"2023-11-09T14:24:17","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T14:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings-new\/?page_id=22958"},"modified":"2024-12-11T15:08:35","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T15:08:35","slug":"younger-and-more-likely-to-be-looking-after-relatives-government-census-reveals","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/inclusion\/ethnically-diverse-education-achievement-service\/newsletter-aricles-and-reports\/younger-and-more-likely-to-be-looking-after-relatives-government-census-reveals\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2019Younger and more likely to be looking after relatives&#8217; &#8211; Government Census reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The government have released a report delving into the characteristics of the 71,440 people who identified as \u201cGypsy or Irish Traveller\u201d in the England and Wales Census, which took place in March, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the snapshot headlines from the report, released by the Office for National Statistics earlier this month, are that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gypsies and Irish Travellers (who answered the Census) are about 0.12% of the population \u2013 in other words for every Gypsy or Irish Traveller, there are nearly a thousand non-Gypsy and Traveller people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gypsies and Irish Travellers are also nearly a thousand times more likely to live in a mobile home or caravan than a non-Gypsy or Irish Traveller.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, only one in five of Gypsies and Irish Travellers live in mobile homes or caravans \u2013 the rest live in flats, houses and bungalows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nearly \u00be of Gypsies and Irish Travellers reported being in good or very good health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, the proportion of how many reported being in bad health was a lot higher than the wider population \u2013 nearly twice as many for late middle-aged to elderly Gypsies and Irish Travellers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gypsies or Irish Travellers were almost twice as likely to provide 50 or more hours of unpaid care per week for a relative or friend than the wider population.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-employment was more common among Gypsies and Irish Travellers than in the wider population \u2013 and the most popular occupation (among men in England) was skilled trades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nearly two-thirds of those who identified as Gypsy or Irish Traveller also identified as Christian. This was higher than the wider population of whom less than half identified as Christian.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those who identified as Gypsy or Irish Traveller and Christian were also younger on average \u2013 28 years old &#8211; compared to Christians from the wider population, who averaged 51 years old.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are more younger and less elderly Gypsies and Irish Travellers proportionately than the wider population.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>&nbsp;<\/em><strong>Education<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The census analysis looked at highest level of qualification for people aged 16 years and over. &nbsp;People who identified as Gypsy or Irish Traveller were <strong>three times<\/strong> more likely to have no qualifications<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The diagram below shows the highest level qualification percentages for Gypsy or Irish Traveller ethnic groups and England and Wales population, England and Wales, Census 2021<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"674\" height=\"296\" id=\"longdesc-return-22960\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings?longdesc=22960&#038;referrer=22958\" tabindex=\"-1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2023\/11\/GRTS-qualifications.jpg\" alt=\"Graph showing GRTS qualifications\" class=\"wp-image-22960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2023\/11\/GRTS-qualifications.jpg 674w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2023\/11\/GRTS-qualifications-640x281.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/166\/2023\/11\/GRTS-qualifications-300x132.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shows that over half (56.8%) of people who identified as Gypsy or Irish Traveller had no qualifications, in comparison to 18.2% of the England and Wales population had no qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/census\/census2021dictionary\/variablesbytopic\/educationvariablescensus2021\/highestlevelofqualification#:~:text=Level%204%20qualifications%20or%20above,%2C%20teaching%2C%20nursing%2C%20accountancy\" rel=\"noopener\">Level 4 qualifications<\/a> were the next most common category for those who identified as Gypsy or Irish Traveller (11.2%).
