{"id":21934,"date":"2023-09-13T14:14:38","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T13:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings-new\/?page_id=21934"},"modified":"2024-12-11T13:00:23","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T13:00:23","slug":"21934-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/sensory-and-or-physical\/visual-impairment\/top-tips-for-vi-inclusion-in-the-classroom\/21934-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Seating positions and useful equipment in class"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Strategies to help children and young people with a visual impairment (VI) access the curriculum and maintain a good posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For children and young people with a VI, the seating and viewing position is a crucial factor in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>accessing the curriculum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>maintaining good posture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/sensory-and-or-physical\/visual-impairment\/eye-conditions\/\">eye condition<\/a> and individual needs a child or young person may need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>to sit in the front of the classroom, so they can see the teacher and white board<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to sit on the appropriate side of the classroom if their field of vision is affected<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to have good ambient lighting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>windows to have blinds to reduce glare<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to be seated near a power socket if they are using technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To support posture a child or young person may need to use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a slope for near viewing: the desk should be big enough to use the slope<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>low vision aids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an iPad or other resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>large print resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid clutter especially around the whiteboard.
