Identifying and supporting multilingual children who may also have SEN <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

All teachers and practitioners should use the proficiency assessment to track pupils\u2019 progress and set language learning targets regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a multilingual child is showing challenging or concerning behaviour or an inability to express themselves or not making friends or making no progress in learning English you should refer to our Devon guidance pathway to SEN identification in multilingual pupils. <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also important to begin a Graduated response<\/a> if you have any concerns about progress or development of a multilingual child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have analysed all required information\/evidence (including the checklist<\/a>) and reviewed your current provision and you are still concerned about the child’s progress, please complete an online referral form for home language communication assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EDEAS home language communication assessment (KS1, KS2 or KS3) can provide you with a fuller picture of multilingual children’s home language skills and enable you to make a comparison between the child’s levels of competence in their home language versus English. EDEAS can conduct home language communication assessments in the languages they have inhouse<\/a> <\/a>only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EDEAS will assess only speaking and listening skills as part of the home language communication assessment; no literacy skills will be assessed. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home language communication assessment service is chargeable for all schools, including maintained schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have already identified SEN, then a HLCA is not appropriate and you should follow the usual pathways for support and diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home language communication assessment referral form<\/u><\/strong><\/a> and Parent\/guardian consent form<\/a> (please retain this until contacted by the advisory team to confirm the request, who will then ask you to email a copy through)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we receive the completed referral form, we will analyse the information and one of our advisory teachers will contact you to arrange a home language communication assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
