{"id":17485,"date":"2022-08-28T14:54:05","date_gmt":"2022-08-28T13:54:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings-new\/?page_id=17485"},"modified":"2024-12-10T16:51:41","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T16:51:41","slug":"understanding-disability","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/inclusion\/equality\/understanding-disability\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding disability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supporting staff and pupils to understand disability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ableism\/disability is discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities and\/or people who are perceived to be disabled. &nbsp;Ableism characterizes people as defined by their disabilities and inferior to the non-disabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important that staff are aware of the changes to the Equality Act regarding the legislation around disability.&nbsp; The <a href=\"https:\/\/councilfordisabledchildren.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Council for disabled children<\/a>&nbsp;provide<a href=\"https:\/\/councilfordisabledchildren.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/files\/equality-act-schools_online.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\"> guidance on what staff need to know<\/a>.&nbsp; Staff should also be provided with the appropriate CPD, so that they are able to manage pupils with disabilities in the classroom.&nbsp; For example, too often children with a diagnosis of ADHD are receiving sanctions for not being able to sit still or being fidgety in class.&nbsp; 36% of SEND children experience bullying due to their disability<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/education\/talis-2018-results-volume-ii-19cf08df-en.htm\" rel=\"noopener\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a> and some of these reports are experiences in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Establishments should also develop a growth mindset, in order to prevent disability discrimination amongst children and staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-dcc-nostyle-button\"><a onclick=\"dataLayer.push({&amp;apos;buttonEvent&amp;apos;: &amp;apos;Information page&amp;apos;});\" class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/inclusion\/bpriresource\/\">Bullying, prejudice and racism incidents (BPRI) resource 2022<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Support, advice and resources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/devonias.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Dias<\/a> &#8211; support and advice on special educational needs and disability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/childmind.org\/guide\/teachers-guide-to-adhd-in-the-classroom\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Teacher&#8217;s guide to understanding ADHD<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/resilienteducator.com\/classroom-resources\/activities-for-teaching-tolerance-in-the-classroom\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Developing tolerance in your curriculum<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvusd.org\/cms\/lib\/AZ01901092\/Centricity\/Domain\/1318\/Disability%20Awareness%20Packet%202.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Celebrate Disability awareness month<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Supporting staff and pupils to understand disability Ableism\/disability is discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities and\/or people who are perceived to be disabled.
