Step 1:Ensure your policies are adequate and up to date.
Provide CPD for all staff. Just like safeguarding, this is everyone’s responsibility.
Foster respect and good relations in the establishment.
Ensure the curriculum is diverse and that children have the opportunity to be educated around bullying, prejudice and racism.
Step 2:Include in your policies and share with pupils how they can report incidents.
Offer instant support and reassurance for victims and targets. Reassurance, referral to counselling or a safe place are vital.
Contact their parents/guardians, outlining the disclosure and next steps.
If no investigation needs to take place, ensure the assailant receives education straight away, such as learning resources in the intervention/reset room. Good practice of this will be shared on our website.
Step 3: Contact the parents/guardians of the assailant(s).
Investigate the allegation, take appropriate steps to educate and correct the assailant(s) behaviour.
If appropriate arrange a restorative meeting.
Use the ‘When to call the Police – Hate crime/incidents’ flow chart to decide if you should contact the Police.
Step 4: Record the incident carefully and correctly on your establishment’s system.
Be mindful to use the words of the children, if it is your opinion, say so.
Report to the Police if appropriate.
Step 5: Make any referrals such as Young Devon, MASH or Prevent
Report the incident to the local authority through the reporting platform: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ReportingBPRI/
Step 6: Review the suggestions on the reporting platform and put into action the suggestions that are relevant to your children.
Identify if any changes need to be made to your process and policies.
Monitor the situation and plan a review date with the target.
