Nearly all insects begin life as eggs. Protected by tough waterproof, often elegant patterned shells, these can survive a wide range of adverse conditions, from drought to severe frost. Many species pass the winter as eggs, often exposed on the bare twigs of what will be their food plants. The hatchling rarely resemble their parents, never have wings and often have quite different feeding habits.<\/p>\n
