South West Primary Maths Conference: It’s Good to Talk – Tuesday 21 November 2017
- Neil Mercer – Professor Emeritus of Education at the University of Cambridge
- Ems Lord – Director of NRICH, University of Cambridge
- Dr Alf Coles – Senior Lecturer in Education, University of Bristol.
Talk has a key role to play in learning mathematics at all ages. Talk allows children to share and shape their thinking, interrogate other people’s understanding and make sense of mathematics experienced and represented in different ways and in different contexts. Talk enables children to make connections and allows them to frame their understanding. High quality talk is a feature of high quality mathematics lessons and is central to the aims of the national curriculum and to teaching for mastery.
This conference provides an opportunity for teachers to consider the place of talk both in the classroom and in relation to current issues in mathematics education.
The day includes keynote addresses exploring the theme of talk in mathematics led by three nationally renowned speakers, Neil Mercer, Ems Lord and Dr Alf Coles, and workshop sessions led by Babcock Maths expert consultants.
