Vocabulary Conference with Jean Gross: The Wonder of Words
Wednesday 6 November 2019 – Exeter
Closing the word gap – Language open doors, it unlocks the world of reading and the imagination, the excitement of writing, the capacity to explore new subjects and releases our potential to learn and grow as an individual. (Jane Harley – Oxford Language report)
The term ‘word gap’ is typically used to refer to children in the Early Years or pupils starting in reception with language development far below age related expectations but we know that this issue affects a far wider range of children and not just those starting school. If a child has started school with a gap then this is likely to continue throughout their education and beyond without careful and structured teaching to address this.
This conference will be exploring the importance of addressing the word gap early but also to explore ways we can continue to develop children’s vocabulary throughout their education whatever their starting points.
