Traffic information

St Marychurch Road, Newton Abbot

What we are doing and why

We are removing trees infected with ash dieback for the safety of road users.
Work will be carried out between Monday 8 June to Friday 26 June 2020 under traffic lights and a road closure.

The road closure will take place from Monday 22 June to Friday 26 June 2020 between 09:30 and 15:30.

Trees with ash dieback become unstable, will shed branches and can collapse as the level of infection spreads within the tree.

Collapsing trees, even relatively small ones, can present a significant hazard to passing vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Therefore, we are removing infected trees.

Work may start earlier or continue later in the Mayflower Avenue section adjacent to St Marychurch Road.

Why we have to close the road

We must ensure the safety of our workforce and the public, and in order to comply with our safety guidelines, we will be setting up closures between 09:30 and 15:30.

Working during the COVID-19 pandemic

The maintenance of the highway infrastructure is part of the essential work that must continue and the highway teams, including our tree contractors, are identified as key workers. The tree contractors have health and safety procedures in place in accordance with Public Health England advice.

Protecting wildlife

An ecologist will be on site throughout the work and is making sure all necessary precautions are taken regarding nesting birds, dormice and other wildlife habitats.
