Traffic information

A382 Newton Road, Heathfield

What we’re doing

We are carrying out carriageway resurfacing work on the A382 Newton Road, Bovey Tracey (adjacent to Heathfield Industrial estate).

We will be closing approximately 500 metres of the A382 Newton Road, Bovey Tracey (adjacent to Heathfield Industrial estate) with the middle of the closure being outside the BP garage forecourt.

The road will be closed in one-direction while preparatory work takes place over two nights (from 7 pm until 7 am) on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 February. This will enable traffic from the A38 to travel to Bovey Tracey as normal, however, traffic heading from Bovey Tracey to A38 will need to use the diversion route.

The road will then be completely closed over two nights (from 7 pm until 7 am) on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 February  – reopening by 7 am Saturday 22 February.

A road closure is necessary due to the width of the road and for the safety of the workforce.

At the same time, in order to maximise the use of the closure and minimise future disruption to the general public, we will also be carrying out work to reinforce the strength of the existing road pavement, cleaning highway drainage/ditches and renewing road markings in the area.

When we work at night we try and complete all the noisy activities by 11.00 pm. This does mean that there will be some noise into the early hours, but we will keep it to a minimum.

The scheme is dependent on weather conditions which may impact on the duration of the scheme. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption.

Diversion route

The signed diversion in place during the overnight closures will be via Newton Road, Old Newton Road and Battle Road and the same in the opposite direction.

We are obliged to sign diversions that use roads of the same classification to the road that is temporarily closed. Drivers may choose to use local knowledge to identify alternative, and possibly shorter, routes.

For the official diversion routes, we are obligated to provide a diversion of similar standard to the road we’ve closed so that HGVs can use it. We appreciate that there are other, shorter, narrower routes and that local traffic will make its own way around.

During this work, we would request that no vehicles are parked on the road. Access to properties for residents only within the site during these working hours may be accommodated by liaison with the foreman on site in exceptional circumstances, although this is not guaranteed. The closure will be lifted outside of these hours for access.

Access will always be maintained for emergency vehicles and we make sure that any affected bus companies know about the road closure. If a bus is not going to run a notice will be displayed at the bus stop. Stagecoach will be able to provide you with more details.

There is no legal obligation or express statutory authority that enables Devon County Council to compensate for increased costs or any financial loss suffered as a result of the traffic management in place.

While every effort is made to inconvenience the public as little as possible there are times when however regrettable, interruptions cannot be avoided. If you would like any further information, please contact our Customer Service Centre on 0345 155 1004.
