Traffic information

A375 Vicarage Road, Sidmouth

What we are doing

We are carrying out carriageway resurfacing and drainage work on A375 Sidmouth along Temple Street, Vicarage Road, including High Street and Fore Street, as it has reached the end of its serviceable life.

Repairs will be made to utility covers and gullies as required and parts of the drainage system will be replaced. We will be carrying out maintenance of the highway signs and road markings will be reinstated once the new road surface is completed.

We will be using two types of traffic management to carry out the work safely either at night or during the day within the time frame for the scheme:

  • Road closures with diversions.
  • Temporary traffic lights to maintain one lane open for use.

When we are closing the road

This work will take place between 10 January 2022 and 1 April 2022. To minimise disruption, work will be carried out by closing sections of the road at a time.

In order to provide you with advance notice of the road closures and areas of parking restrictions, we have divided the scheme for road closures and diversion routes described below. These areas will be further subdivided in order to carry out the work in smaller sections.

Traffic management

Traffic management is needed due to the extent of the work being undertaken on the road and for the safety of the workforce. The majority of the work will be done under road closures.

Where work can be carried out safely using temporary traffic lights, these will be used in order to minimise delay and disruption to the travelling public.

Advance signage will notify of future closures.

How local traffic is being handled

Traffic will be signed to use the diversion routes which will be in operation. Access will always be maintained for emergency vehicles.

We will work during the day to minimise noise disruption to residents and try to maintain access for residents where possible. We may have to restrict access during certain periods, but we will try to minimise this and provide advance notice to the public.

Three gate person will be available at each closure to help any questions and deal with any access issues.

Why is there such a long diversion route?

We are obliged to sign diversions that use roads of the same classification to the road that is temporarily closed. This is especially important for HGV and drivers of larger vehicles.

Local drivers may choose to use their local knowledge to identify alternative, appropriate, and possibly shorter, routes.
