A373 Cullompton to Honiton

What are we doing?

Resurfacing and drainage work is being carried out along the A373 at 3 separate locations during September 2019. We will be coordinating this work to minimise disruption and reduce costs.

When is the work being carried out?

The work will be carried out in 3 separate sections:

  • Section 1 – Drainage repairs will be commencing on 2 September near Sheldon Road junction, Dulford for a period of 3 weeks. Temporary traffic signals will operate for the duration of this work.
  • Section 2 – Resurfacing will be carried out on A373 at Awliscombe. A road closure will be in operation overnight on 12, 13 and 16 September.
  • Section 3 – Resurfacing will be carried out on A373 at Hembury Fort. A road closure will be in operation overnight from 17-19 September.

The road closure will be in operation from 7.00pm to 7.00am. During the road closure, a signed diversion will be in place via A373, B3181, Cumberland Way, A30, A373 and vice versa.

The work is weather dependent so dates may vary. Advanced signage will be in place to advise motorists.

Why are we doing this work?

We have a duty to maintain the county’s roads in a safe condition. We have assessed the condition of the existing road surface and in line with our asset management principles have prioritised these sections of road for resurfacing.

Why do we have to close the road?

We must ensure the safety of our workforce and the travelling public. To ensure we comply with our safety guidelines we also need to provide a safe working zone for our workforce. We have arranged for the majority of the work to be carried out overnight in order to keep the disruption to a minimum.

Why is there such a long diversion route?

We have a duty to direct traffic along a similar standard of road to that being closed so that all vehicles, including large articulated vehicles, can safely use the diversion route. Lighter traffic with good knowledge of the area will be able to use local roads to take shorter routes around the closure.

We apologise for any inconvenience this essential work causes and assure you that we are doing our best to minimise disruption wherever possible.
